Unique atypical spiral staircase Zlín

This staircase was created at the request of the architect of one of our clients, who entrusted us with a specific space for the staircase and expressed their vision thus: “airy, atypical, glassy and unique.

After about 1 month we submitted a design for the staircase, which impressed the architect and gave us the space to turn the vision into reality.

The implementation of the staircase was divided into 3 phases, each of which has certain unique specifics.
  • Steel construction - helix
Here we are dealing with 2 steel helixes of different radiuses of curvature connected to our designed staircase system, where the supporting steel structures of the helixes interact with each other by means of glass staircase steps.

The special feature here is the uniquely designed H-shaped helix profile, which is not only load-bearing for the entire staircase and its other elements such as steps and handrails, but thanks to our designed shape and progressive technology of load-bearing bonded joints, it also forms an „invisible“ anchorage for the glass handrail, which could thus be made at the client's request without visible anchoring elements such as screws or discs.

The design of the structure included both the spatial representation of the client's conceptual idea and a complete structural assessment, which is at the level of the most difficult implementations, as it is a somewhat spatially complex structure. However, given our experience, we are not afraid to stand by our proposal, which meets the requirements of the ČSN standards without fail.
  • Glass staircase steps
The glass steps are made with absolute precision from laminated safety glass, have an irregular trapezoidal shape and all anchoring elements are recessed in the glass so as not to cause any disturbance. The steps are designed in such a way that, in addition to their load-bearing function for the movement of people on the structure, they also connect the individual steel helixes. The entire structure is thus torsionally rigid and sufficiently structurally load-bearing while maintaining its absolutely unique „light“ appearance.

The upper edge of the staircase has a fused anti-slip strip in 2 rows so that a person on the staircase does not slip even when walking only in socks. The steps thus form an inseparable design element of the staircase.
  • Glass handrail
The glass handrail is again designed with aesthetics in mind, but at the same time statically oversized to give a feeling of absolute safety. It is made of double-layer thermally toughened safety glass and fully complies with the requirements of the standard for handrails. The curvature of the glass perfectly follows the helix steel structure thanks to the very precise 3D orientation that we always perform for our constructions of this type and the mutual inconsistency of the constructions during the implementation is thus completely eliminated even for such spatially complex shapes.

The uniqueness of this glass handrail is the anchoring of the glass directly into the centre of the steel H-profile using modern bonded joint technology. Do not look for any screws, discs or handles on this structure.

The result of our work is a perfect clean design. We are convinced, as is our client, that a unique and dominant feature of the entire space has been created here.
